LES PARENTS TERRIBLES
By Jean Cocteau
Imagine the ultimate dysfunctional family - a cross between the black farce of Joe Orton and the twisted sophistication of Noel Coward - and you get some idea of the nature of this brilliantly stylish tragi-comedy by Jean Cocteau.
The play scandalized audiences in Paris in 1938 and it still has the ability to shock today. The tale of a mother’s unhealthy passion for her son, the son’s love for his father’s mistress and the unrequited desire of an ageing spinster for her brother in law. Half melodrama, half farce, Cocteau is revealing a real truth of human nature – that passion is often as ridiculous as it is intense. For those caught up in it, obsessive love is all consuming emotion and pain. For those of us watching from the sidelines, it makes you wince even as you laugh.
Directed by internationally acclaimed director and designer Stewart Laing, Les Parents Terribles is a play of violently shifting moods and simmering passions.
If you think the children are bad, wait 'til you meet the parents!
