EUROPE
By David Greig
“Wives worry, husbands suspect, lovers are cheated of a few moments together, a gentle shudder across the skin of the nation …” Act One
Old and new Europeans collide at a time of great change in this poetic and comic tale of love, loss and longing.
EUROPE takes us to a small Eastern European border town once famous for making soup, light bulbs and checking passports. International Express Trains thunder in and out, bringing with them different people from worlds apart.
EUROPE promises to be a deeply compelling journey in search of deeper identities on a global scale. Is there no stopping this powerful train in its tracks?
Award-winning Scottish playwright David Greig is one of the most prolific in Britain today. He was responsible for the Rep’s sell-out show Dr Korczak’s Example and Dundee Rep recently toured his version of Ubu the King to the Cervantio Festival in Mexico.
EUROPE was first performed at the Traverse Theatre in 1994. Its themes of nationhood and globalisation resonated greatly with events in Europe at the time but are probably even more pressing in today’s climate. EUROPE opens in Dundee then tours to London’s Barbican Theatre before returning for a final week back on Dundee’s stage.
‘There is the sharp, analytic intelligence, the crackling inventiveness of a real writer buzzing around this gripping play.’ The Scotsman
‘David Greig is astoundingly prolific - he is also one of the most intellectually stimulating dramatists around.’ The Guardian
